The Legend Behind the Glory
20+ Years of Tipping Excellence
Meet Mat
Founder, Commissioner & Chief Banter Officer
The Origin Story
It all started over 20 years ago in a small office in Melbourne. Mat, armed with nothing but a dodgy spreadsheet, a love for Group 1 racing, and an unshakeable belief that he knew more about horses than his mates, decided to prove it once and for all.
"Pick one horse per race," he declared to a handful of sceptical colleagues. "Best total points at the end of the carnival wins eternal bragging rights." What started as a bit of office fun quickly spiralled into something far more serious. The banter was legendary. The Excel spreadsheet? Magnificent.
"I've spent more time perfecting this spreadsheet than I have on my actual job. My boss doesn't need to know that."
- Mat, probably during a performance review
Year after year, Mat faithfully collected everyone's tips, updated the leaderboard (usually within minutes of the race finishing), and maintained the sacred Honour Board. The competition grew. Friends told friends. Colleagues told other colleagues. Before long, Mat was running a tipping empire out of his inbox.
The Problem of Success
Here's the thing about doing something really well for 20 years: people notice. And they want in.
Mat's phone was constantly buzzing. "Can I join the comp?" "Can you add my cousin?" "My mate from the TAB wants to play." The Excel spreadsheet, once a beautiful thing, started groaning under the weight of a hundred tipsters. Emails were getting lost. Mat was spending more time on admin than actually watching the races.
Something had to change.
Enter: Group One Glory
And so, after two decades of spreadsheet heroics, Mat finally made the call: it was time to go digital. Mat's Group One Glory was born - a proper website where tipsters could pick their horses, track their points, and most importantly, talk smack to each other in real-time.
The leaderboard updates itself now (Mat is both relieved and slightly sad about this). The results come in automatically. And the chat feature? Let's just say the banter has reached new heights.
Same legendary competition. Same questionable tips. Now with 100% less Excel.
The Rules (Such As They Are)
Pick ONE horse per Group 1 race
No hedging. No multi-legs. Commit.
1st = 3 points, 2nd = 2 points, 3rd = 1 point
Simple maths. Even for punters.
Most points wins eternal glory
Your name on the Honour Board. Forever.
It's free
Just bragging rights. That's the prize.
Join the Glory
Whether you're a racing tragic who knows every horse by name, or someone who picks based on pretty colours - you're welcome here. The only requirement is a willingness to back your tips and cop the banter when they don't come in.
Mat's still here, by the way. He's just got more time to actually watch the races now. And occasionally remind everyone that he once had a spreadsheet that could do all this. It was a really good spreadsheet.
